 Computer Networking

The primary responsibility of the Engineering Computer and Network Services Department (ECNS) is to provide on-going support for those College of Engineering computer network systems physically located in Auburn Science & Engineering Center (Electrical & Computer, Mechanical, & Civil Engineering), Shrank Hall North (Civil Engineering), and Whitby Hall (Chemical Engineering) respectively. This support includes repairing damaged network cabling and connections, upgrading current network media, expanding the current system as the number of networked computers within the College of Engineering increases. ECNS also maintains the College of Engineering Web server, www.engineering.uakron.edu. This Gateway PC configured server running Fedora Core Linux houses all College of Engineering web pages. It also serves as the Domain Name Server (DNS) for the College network.

Support, as noted above, also extends to College of Engineering student organizations through contact with respective Faculty Advisors responsible for the student organization.

College of Engineering Faculty and staff may request additional network connections in offices and research labs by contacting the ECNS Staff Assistant(s) in the Auburn Science & Engineering Center room 226 @ (330)972-5369.

 Windows

The ECNS department provides all phases of software and hardware maintenance services for computers running various versions of the Microsoft Windows operating systems used by College of Engineering Students, Faculty, Staff, and Administration. Microsoft application software such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visual Studio Net, etc. are supported and maintained. Certain specialized engineering software applications, such as HKS Abaqus, MSC Patran, and LSDYNA, are included.

The ECNS department maintain PC's in the ECNS Staff PC Lab (ASEC 226). The staff also provide hardware/software/network support in the Civil Engineering Student PC Lab (ASEC 212), and the Chemical Engineering Student PC Lab (Whitby 208). The ECNS department also provides information, recommendations, and implementation assistance to the College of Engineering computer fee purchase process, from ordering and receiving, to installation and maintenance.

Although the ECNS department is not a computer/ printer system repair facility, the ECNS staff can provide direct assistance in the replacement of failed or damaged hardware that have been purchased by College of Engineering personnel, including warranty services or hardware purchase and installation.

One additional note is that College of Engineering Students, Faculty, Staff and Administration may request access to use additional College computer resources when available such as special color laser printers and scanners, by contacting the ECNS staff directly @ (330)972-5369 or in ASEC-226 during normal business hours.

 Linux/Unix

Engineering Computer and Network Services maintains an array of Unix/Linux based workstations and servers for the College of Engineering. Many of these systems are available for use by the College of Engineering Faculty and Graduate Students, and are located in ASEC 226, where the ECNS Staff share space with the Computational Mechanics computer lab. Engineering faculty and graduate students may request accounts on these machines by contacting the Mr. R. Shardy, Sr. in ASEC 225.

ECNS also provides informational support to those users in need of "DATA" backup for those College of Engineering Faculty and Departmental Staff. Contact the ECNS Director, Mr. R. Shardy, Sr. in ASEC 225 @ (330)972-5368 for additional information.
