Halle Jones Capers joined the University of Akron as Director of the Women in Engineering Program in June of 2003. A lifelong resident of the Akron Area, Ms. Capers graduated as a valedictorian from Springfield High School in 1985 where she was active in band and various honor societies.

Ms. Capers then went on to the University of Akron with the assistance of the University’s Honor’s Program and several other scholarships including the Martin Luther King Scholarship. Ms. Capers graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1990. Her collegiate activities included Inroads, founder and first president of the University’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, Student Toastmaster’s, the Gospel Choir, and various honor societies. Since graduating in 1990, Ms. Capers has worked as a Management Trainee at the East Ohio Gas Company, and a Project Engineer at Finkbeiner, Pettis and Strout. Most recently as Highway Department Manager for DLZ Ohio, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio, Ms. Capers led the design efforts of multi-million dollar highway and bridge projects including the Relocation of Brookpark Road and the Bagley Road/CSX Railroad Grade Separation.

Throughout her career, Ms Capers has supported and mentored women and minorities of all ages to pursue a career in engineering and to set and attain very high goals both personally and professionally. Ms. Capers is a motivational speaker for the Youth Motivational Task Force for the Akron Public Schools, and has been a mentor and guest speaker for the Women in Engineering Program for many years.  She is also a Tutor Coordinator for the Girls Rule! in Math and Science Program for Project GRAD Akron.

Ms. Capers is a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.  Other current activities include member of the University of Akron College of Engineering Alumni Board. She resides in the Village of Richfield with her husband, Mark and son, Cameron along with two cats and a bird.
